Jim Gouger did in fact pass away in late January. Dawn and Marshal Bowen have been in touch with Jim's family but as of now have not learned anything about a memorial service. I had hoped to post an announcement about this, but was waiting for more information.

Ok, so I apologize if this appears multiple times. This is my first time really checking out the website and I thought I would post a response.

I am working for the Department of Defense and enjoying using my geography skills on a daily basis.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the increasing use of Google Earth (GE) by everyday users, and how it has impacted (or may impact) the discipline of geography. Are Mary Wash geographers using both GE and ESRI for their projects?

Hi Geography alums. I finally made it onto this website and am just checking out the features. I am working as a geographer for Department of Defense and it has turned0 out well.

I was wondering if anyone in the community has any insight/thoughts on the increasing use of Google Earth among everyday users. Have there been any discussions of the interplay between Google Earth and ArcMap? Are geography students at Mary Wash using both for their projects?

They tell me that the US Census Bureau is the biggest employer of
geographers in the country...I don't know if that's true, but we
certainly employ a lot of them! With the 2010 Census looming there are
going to be a lot of both permanent and temporary geographer and
cartographer positions coming up. To see what opportunities are

I did an internship with the park service my last year of school, and after staying home to raise my daughter for 3 years, I've returned to the NPS as a GIS Techinician up at Prince William Forest Park. Its temporary but hopefully will develop further as money becomes available.

Internships definitely pay off, though. It lets people get a feel for you and then when it comes time to fill a position, you're already a known quantity.

I tried to get into teaching a few years ago, but because my degree was Geography rather than History or Social Studies the school system was not interested. It's a shame, but schools focus more on the paper you have than the knowledge.

Thanks Penny, we have a number of Mary Wash Geographers teaching in public schools and we continue to work with the Dept. of Education to make geography an integral part of all our future-teachers' educations. Still, because of state standards, our education program advises students interested in teaching social sciences/history at the secondary level NOT to major in geography. Any ideas on how to convince our Education Department to change this policy are very welcome!

As our current group of seniors approach graduation they are looking for (and often finding) jobs, thinking about careers, preparing for graduate school, and just wondering what will happen next. So, it seems a good time to ask the 200 or so alumni on this site:

What have you been doing since you left Mary Washington? I hope this will also help alumni continue to connect!

Lisa,

Perhaps we can add a new field that allows people to enter maiden names when they register (also allowing members to update their accounts when we get this done). I don't know if it is possible to then have a new column added to the Alumni List but we'll see. But, as I said to Dave, we're in the end-of-the-semester weeds here at Mary Wash so it might take a while.

The site is a work in progress. I agree, we still haven't worked out the best way to organize the discussions. We have experimented with another way that showed threads a bit more, but it had other draw backs. If anyone wants to give us a link to a site they feel does a good job organizing discussions or forums, we'll check it out and see if we can copy the format.
